Genesis –

1:5 – God calls the light, Day. And the darkness, Night. Creation has begun and God is naming Day and Night and establishing boundaries for them.

1:8 – God names the firmament, Heaven. Identity and boundary.

1:10 – God names the dry land, Earth and the waters, Seas.

2:19 – God creates animals and creatures and brings them to Adam. Adam names them.

2:23 – Adam names Woman. God allows Adam to name His creations.

3:9 – God calls to Adam after the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil is eaten. Adam and his wife are hiding. But Adam does answer God.

3:20 – Adam gives his wife the name, Eve.

4:17 – Cain names a city after his son, Enoch.

4:25 – Eve names her next son, Seth.

4:26 – Seth names his son, Enos. Men begin to call out the name of the Lord. (I’ve heard this referred to several different ways. Some teachers say people were worshipping God. Other’s say that people were using the name of God in vain. I’m not sure of the answer. The context would lead me to think that this is a bad thing, which would lead to the idea that people are taking the name of the Lord in vain.)

5:2 – When God created man and woman, He called them Adam. A husband and wife are to be one flesh (Gen 2:24; Mark 10:8; Eph 5:31).

5:3 – Another reference to Seth being named. Also gives Adam’s age at Seth’s birth.

5:29 – Noah is named. His name means rest. His father names him with the intention of it being comforting.

11:9 – The city of Babel is named. Because that is where God confuses them and changes their languages. (Fun fact: Humans are the only creatures that have different languages in different areas. i.e. Horses or dogs from any part of the world speak the same language and can communicate with each other.)

12:8 – Abram builds an alter to the Lord. And calls out His name.

12:18 – Pharaoh is mad that Abram pretended that Sarai was his sister and didn’t state that she was his wife.

13:4 – Abram builds another alter and calls upon the name of the Lord. These occurrences seem to be Abram seeking guidance from, or offering praise to God.

16:11 – The Lord tells Hagar to return to her mistress and God gives her the name of her son. Even though Ishmael came from disobedience and will ultimately be the father of Israel’s enemies. God still honors His covenant with Abram and multiples Ishmael.

16:13 – Hagar calls upon the name of the Lord and declares that God sees her.

16:14 – The well Hagar had this experience at is named accordingly.

16:15 – Hagar’s son is named, Ishmael.
